So, you’re ready to put your business on the web? Here are a few tips to keep in mind regarding your website:
Website Tip #1 - Use Quality Content - The most important element of your website is the written content. As you prepare the content for each page, think about what main key words and phrases visitors are most likely to use when performing an Internet search, and be sure to use a good mix of those key words and phrases in your content. This can help improve the chances of your website showing up in the search results. (Read here to learn more about Search Results)
Website Tip #2 - Promoting Your Website -Be sure to include your website address on all of your business materials, i.e., business cards, letterhead, posters, email signature blocks, newsletters, yellow page ads, etc. Using social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter can also be effective -Digg and Del.icio.us are social linking sites that could potentially have the most impact. Adding your business to Google’s Local Business Center can help you reach customers on Google Maps and web search (you will need to set up a free Google Account, if you don’t already have one). Similarly, you can add your business to Yahoo!Local and YELLOWPAGES.COM. You may want to do some online paid advertising with major search engines by using their advertising services such as Google AdWords, which will get your website listed in the “Sponsored Links” area of the Google search results. Yahoo! Advertising also offers these services.
Website Tip #3 - Search Engine Optimization (SEO) - There are services out there who will perform search engine optimization for you. However, please be aware that no one can guarantee you a #1 ranking on Google or any other search engine (LAPDesigns makes no such guarantees). Do your research and be wary of anyone who makes ranking guarantees. Also, you should never have to link to an SEO, and avoid SEO’s that claim to submit your website to thousands of search engines. These tactics can actually harm your website’s rankings. While LAPDesigns does not provide extensive SEO services, I do implement website building practices that are search engine friendly by following GoDaddy.com’s Top 10 SEO Checklist.
Website Tip #4 - Open Directory Project -Consider submitting your website to the open directory project, if possible. Google considers this directory to be an important link. Be patient. A real human has to check your website, before it's listed in the Directory. Submit your website to specialized directories. For instance, a website on butterflies should be sent to biology or entomology directories. Don't get too submission happy, though. Google, in an effort to combat click fraud, often filters out websites linked from link farms, or pages with nothing but links to other websites. This is one reason why free services to register your website may hurt you. Stick to specialized directories and organizations. They're more likely to help and not hurt your rankings.
Website Tip #5 - Search Engine Submission - Once your website has been published, LAPDesigns will submit your website to the Yahoo and Google search engines (there are many search engines out there, but these two generate about 90-95% of all web traffic, and many of the other search engines use Yahoo and Google technology, so they are likely to pick the website up eventually anyway). Once a website has been registered with Yahoo and Google, it can take awhile for your website to show up in searches – that is due to the amount of time it can take those search engines to crawl your website.
Website Tip #6 - Page Ranking - As previously stated, LAPDesigns makes no guarantees as to where your website will be ranked in search results. Page ranking is not instantaneous - it takes place over a progression of time, and no one can control the amount of time it takes or the placement of the page ranking itself. You will generate the most traffic to your website by promoting it offline as mentioned in the “Promoting Your Website” section above.
